SNOW - Confirmed team #2 The Djudes

tl_files/Blog_Pictures/WT12/The-Djudes crew pic.png

The 2011 Wängl Tängl was the first year the The Djudes lined up at the event specifically as their own crew. The team, consisting of Chris ‘CK’ Kröll(C), Flo Heim and Mario Wanger were always going to be a dangerous combination with years riding experience in their home Vans Penken Park and considerable Wängl team riding time as members of other teams in the past. Their resulting second placing and automatic re-qualification for the Vans Wängl Tängl 2012 main event stands as a living testament to that…

Mayrhofen local and The Djudes team Captain, Chris ‘CK’ Kröll, had to reshuffle the staring line up shortly before last year’s Wängl as young power striker, Werni Stock, got a late call up to the European X-Games, before a crushing ACL knee injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Fortunately for CK, The Djudes reserve bench is long and deep, other crew members include Benny Wetscher, Tom Wagner, Andi Pfister, Peter König and Tom Klocker who were all at the ready. This was fortunate, as a further injury set back struck only days before kick off when Peter König blew a shoulder, seeing Flo Heim step up into the team and go on to kill it coming off the bench.

We spoke to CK and discussed the tough Captains choices he faced last year. ”We went in pretty relaxed going into the competition last year, despite the injuries. The team really gelled, and we were pretty stoked firstly on second place and then of course making the direct re-qualification for this year’s event.” he said. When asked about the team format, he said,  ”I think it’s one of the best competitions to show what you got as a Team. This year’s 10th Anniversary of the Wängl is going to be even better with stiffer competition, more polished teams and a Quail crew to contend with.” he concluded.

In announcing the The Djudes starting line up for 2012, again CK was faced with some hard choices due to the talent pool at his fingertips on his team roster. Bringing playmaker, Mario Wanger, back into the starting line up and including the marauding, always dangerous, Tom Klocker, off the bench, he explained the team selection, “Werni and Peter have got heavy seasons ahead of them, both filming and contest wise.” he said, “Mario, Tom and I will be riding a lot together this season, giving us the best pre-event fitness training going into the Wängl 2012.” Taking the Tängl Title has been an ellusive but high priority goal for CK, when asked what he thought The Djudes chances were for this year, typically, he modestly summarized it by saying, “I’m looking forward to it, the team is more than solid and I hoping we will kill it again.”

One thing is for sure; The Djudes mean business and have proven hard to beat with home ground advantage. Coming into the event with a fully fit, firing, in form squad and a reserve bench brimming with talent – will this be the year The Djudes take home the bacon? We are looking forward to finding out…

SNOW - Quali team #1 Flying Birds

tl_files/Blog_Pictures/WT12/flying birds profile pic-1-560x270.jpg

Local rippers and solid snow/skate crew, the Flying Birds, have made the grade and been named the first of 30 total Tängl Quali Team for going up for the three open Main Event places at the Vans Wängl Tängl 2012. The team, consisting of Captain Georgy Huber,  a the three time ‘veteran’ at the legendary Wängl Tängl (at the prime old age 17) who cut his rookie status taking 3rd in a team alongside Steve Gruber and Werni Stock in 2010. As captain, he has opted to go for a youth lineup of  Steve Höllwarth (17) and ‘One Foot’ wünderkind, 14 year old,  Roli Tshcoder – both in their rookie year.

Nowadays the crew is working to increase their level of riding by taking part or creating their own photo shoots and testing their skills in several competitions. There first appearance as a crew at the Vans Wängl Tängl presented by G-Shock will be their biggest contest outing to date and they will be shredding their home Van Penken Park.  Their main passion is still to go up the mountain, riding backcountry and having fun together. During the summer they are all into skateboarding, which fulfills their passion of riding boards with style, technical tricks and fun.

The Flying Birds Crew was founded on spontanious idea of Jonas Schöpf, a enthusastic Photographer, and Mustafa Duran, a gifted Skater, about a year ago. While considering a name for the crew, they came to the conclusion that it should be named “Flying Birds”, because a “Bird” is shown as a Symbol for freedom and independence and therefore it attracts the attention of many young people, corresponding to  the Lifestyle and Ideologie of the crew members. Now it was time to find people who are motivated enough to exercise this Trend sports and push themselves in their sport passions. Mustafa and Jonas got in connection with various people in their age and presented their idea. Nearly all of  of them were convinced of their vision, were highly motivated and and joined the Crew with full ambition. Our Crew “Flying Birds” is a Joining together of young people who are motivated for snowboarding and skateboarding – and surfing looks like it will be the next logical step…

The Ästhetiker Jury took the photographic and video postings on the Flying Birds facebook page, there recent form at the Hotzone Opening in Hintertux and quite and incredible 2,961 Likes (at the time of writing this profile) which made their selection as the Official Tängl Quali Team #1 all that much easier. Oh, and being local, they promised to buy us a beer….

“Tuesday Classics” that´s what´s happening in summertime when FLIP (Texta) und AVERAGE (Die Au, Average & Huckey) take some time off from hanging at the local pool and get down in the Tontraeger Records Studio every tuesday to reflect on the golden era of rap music, by translating an american hip hop classic into german language. Every session would only last an afternoon including the reproduction of every original beat by Flip, the text writing and the recording. What started as a pastime weekly session, where humor was the key, was soon picked up by FM4´s Tribe Vibes hip hop radio show – which is aired every Thursday, so Phekt and Trishes could play a brand-new track each week throughout the summer of 2011. After 12 tuesdays the project was ready to be pressed on vinyl and released as a free download. With songs like “Check the Rhime” of A Tribe Called Quest, “Bucktown” of Smif-n-Wessun, “Nuthin But A G Thang” of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg this show will definitely rock the opening party of the Wängl. Get your 80ies and 90ies shine on!

SNOW - Confirmed team #1 Team 99

tl_files/Blog_Pictures/WT12/13-Aesthetiker-Jam-Waengl-Taengl-2011-Winner-Team-96-Steve-Gruber-Rudi-Kroell-Friedl-Kolar-Foto-Erwin-Polanc-560x336.jpg

Hailing out of the Chillertal, representing die Ästhetiker, the first confirmed crew directly qualified to the Tängl Team Main Event are the 2011 Champions,  ”Team 99″. Formerly know as “Team 96″, a name derived from the collective age of  team members Rudi Kröll, Friedl Kolar and Captain Steve Gruber, they looking to defend their title for 2012 against the largest congregation of crews yet. Demonstrating cunning and guile, strategy and tactics, experience and coordination are a major factor in team events, Team 99 secured their place with a all but perfectly executed run in 2011.

Experience and home ground advantage played a big part in their success. For experience, you need to look no further than Wängl poster boy, Steve Gruber. His title success in 2011 brought Steve’s winner trophy haul to three, the most decorated rider in the Vans Wängl Tängl’s 10-year history. Taking top spot on the podium in 2003, 2007 and in 2011, when we asked Steve what he thought his chances were coming into this year he said, “It seems to be coming in 4-year cycles,” he laughed then continued,  ”So it looks like I’m due again in 2015!”  Considering Steve also designs the Red Bull end section with Wolle Nyvelt, and works with Q-Parks on the supersized Vans Penken Park, he is always going to be very hard to beat.

Fellow team member, Rudi Kröll, also rocks two hats during last years event, pulling down his first ever Wängl Tängl title in 2011 while doubling up as the Rider Manager. A couple of good contest results earlier in the season should have sounded fair warning, Rudi is on call at all times for assistance, questions and riders issues – except when he is on course kicking arse! When asked what the winning team strategy was, he replied, “Just ride really…” Prophetic words indeed… Due to the late withdrawal of Wolle Nyvelt to filming commitments with Absinthein Canada last year, Ästhetiker legend and sharp shooter, Friedl Kolar, jumped onboard to complete the team while taking time off from study commitments.

As always the dark horse, Friedl brought stealth, steez and stomp that proved to be the cherry atop a very rich, textured, layer cake to claim his first ever Wängl Tängl title. To sound fair warning for the challengers this year, Team 99 Captain, Steve Gruber, has completed the design for this years end section and was responsible for overseeing the design for the 2012 Trophies on his recent trip to Bali. When asked how the trophies were going, he said,  ”They look pretty sick!” then mused, “Actually, it would look pretty good alongside my other trophies…” then laughed. If last year Team 99 scored 96 out of a 100, be sure they are looking to up the ante in their title defense looking for a score of 99 or above!
